Gannett announced yesterday it will lay off nearly 1400 staffers across eighty of its papers-- all told, 3% of the total Gannett team. The layoffs will be initiated swiftly, and are actually already underway; paid Content’s David Kaplan revealed the publishing giant expects to complete the cuts by July 9th.
For now, the staff cuts will affect Gannett’s community publishing group. Said Kaplan, “sources told us that digital properties like Pointroll, Ripple6 and ShopLocal will be spared.” It’s not yet clear whether USA Today will see cuts. This is Gannett’s third significant round of layoffs in recent years. Last fall it slashed some 3,000 positions in reaction to faltering advertising revenues-- and between 2007 and 2008 the company “eliminated 10,000 jobs.” Source: paid Content, more
