AOL “Absorbs” Platform-A, Media Glow Brands

The death of one brand, the birth of another. As Tim Armstrong’s 100 Days wrapped and his new team gathered for a company-wide meeting to hear his discoveries, the AOL CEO announced the demise of the Platform-A, MediaGlow and People Networks brands. The first two brands will “be absorbed” into other AOL units: Platform-A will be renamed AOL Advertising and MediaGlow will be AOL Media.

Jeff Levick, who joined AOL from Google to head up AOL’s global ad business, will direct traffic at AOL Advertising.  Bill Wilson, who served as president of the MediaGlow content sites, will run the new AOL Media unit.  Business Insider’s Nicholas Carlson explained that, "’People Networks,’” which used to include AIM, ICQ, and social network Bebo is gone for good.”

ClickZ’s Zachary Rodgers said, “One major theme of Armstrong's message to staff is that the company must recommit itself to the user experience, thereby re-equating the AOL brand with quality.”  Armstrong did not rule out the possibility of additional layoffs: while not overtly admitting that more cuts were coming, he demurred, "Let me be totally straightforward and honest and transparent: I'll tell you over the next 60 days."  Source: Click Z, more and Business Insider, more
